Which Window Treatments Are the Most Privacy Friendly?
Your house is your castle, and if you’re like most homeowners, finding Denver window treatments that offer privacy and noise control to maintain your sanctuary is a concern. Any window treatment is more effective than a naked window. However there are some window treatments that offer more privacy than others, especially on specialty windows.
Improving Privacy on Hard to Cover Windows
Most large, rectangular windows you have are a snap to cover with almost any window treatment including Denver shutters, shades, or blinds.
However, there are some situations when you need a special kind of window treatment to achieve the level of privacy you need. These include:
-
Bathroom windows where water and humidity might cause problems for fabric window treatments.
-
Sidelight windows that are tall and thin where window treatments can be pushed around when you use the door.
-
Specialty-shape windows like transoms, circular windows, bow windows, etc., where typical store-bought blinds and curtains can’t cover your window without covering up the window’s unique shape.
-
Big windows that can be hard to reach such as second-story foyer windows.
In these instances, you need window treatments that go the extra mile to add privacy to your space.
As a plus, look for window treatments that can block sound to keep random noise outside and prevent neighbors from overhearing.
The Top Window Coverings for Privacy
The most privacy-friendly window treatment we recommend are Polywood® plantation shutters. Plantation shutters are able to be shut completely, for when blocking all the light and sound you can is your goal. When you want to let light in and see outdoors, just give the louvers a tilt. For high windows, you should position the louvers at an angle so light can come in but passersby can’t see in.
Indoor shutters are also great for specialty-shaped windows because they’re custom built to your exact dimensions. And since Polywood shutters are water resistant, they’re an excellent choice for bathrooms.
Another great window treatment for privacy is roller shades. Roller shades take up minimal space above the window, but are easily pulled down to prevent any views from outside your home. Though they can’t be cut to fit unique window shapes, you can find roller shapes made from moisture-resistant material for areas such as the kitchen or bathroom.
Window Treatments that Don’t Make the Cut for Privacy
While any window treatment adds a minimum amount of privacy, there are two that aren’t as great as those we’ve mentioned. The first is sheer curtains. Sheer curtains were popular years ago and can add an airy feeling to a room. But they don’t offer the level of privacy of other window treatments, particularly when it’s dark out.
Another window covering we don’t recommend for privacy are cheap or bulky blinds, which can break or get stuck at a certain angle. If you can’t completely close the blinds due to breakage, then they’re useless for privacy.
